Nasdaq plans to add an overnight session from 9:00 pm to 4:00 am US Eastern Time (ET), currently expected to start on Sunday 6 December 2026. In Indian Standard Time (IST), that is 7:30 am to 2:30 pm, Monday to Friday, from Monday 7 December. Nasdaq will then trade 23 hours a day, five days a week, but you can use the new session only if your app’s US broker connects to it.

Key takeaways

  • If the launch goes ahead, the night session runs 7:30 am–2:30 pm IST from Monday 7 December 2026, and 6:30 am–1:30 pm IST from Monday 15 March 2027.
  • The regular session moves from 7:00 pm–1:30 am IST to 8:00 pm–2:30 am IST on Monday 2 November 2026.
  • The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) approved the rules on 10 April 2026, but the 6 December start still depends on market-data readiness and any further SEC rule changes.
  • Overnight, only limit orders are accepted and unfilled orders are cancelled at 4:00 am ET (2:30 pm IST in winter); expect thinner trading. Ask your app before 7 December whether it will send orders to the night session.

What Nasdaq is changing, and when

Under its approved “23/5” rules, Nasdaq keeps its 4:00 am–8:00 pm ET day session. After a one-hour pause, the 9:00 pm–4:00 am night session runs on Sunday to Thursday nights. All US exchange-listed shares, including NYSE-listed ones (how NYSE and Nasdaq differ), can trade at night, as can exchange-traded funds (ETFs) that Nasdaq designates.

Nasdaq’s FAQ (25 September 2026) says the switch is “currently expected to occur on Sunday, December 6, 2026, pending SIP readiness as well as any applicable SEC rule changes”. The securities information processors (SIPs), which publish consolidated US quotes and trades, must be ready, and Nasdaq must confirm this in one more rule filing.

Nasdaq 23-hour trading in Indian time

US clocks go back on Sunday 1 November 2026 and forward on Sunday 14 March 2027. India’s do not, so every session moves by an hour in IST (US market timings in India).

All times IST, computed from Nasdaq’s ET hours; times after midnight fall on the next Indian date.

H.R. 139, a bill to make US daylight time permanent, passed the House on 14 July 2026 but not the Senate; if enacted, the night session would run 6:30 am–1:30 pm IST all year.

Can Indian investors use the overnight session?

Only if their app’s US broker takes part. Nasdaq takes orders only from members, which are US broker-dealers; retail investors reach the session through one (Jones Day, 24 September 2026).

Before 7 December, ask your app:

  • Will it send orders to Nasdaq’s night session, and for which stocks and ETFs?
  • Which US broker executes and clears those orders, and on which venue?
  • Which order types will it accept, and what happens to unfilled orders at 2:30 pm IST?
  • Are brokerage and currency-conversion charges the same as in regular hours?

Risks of trading overnight

  • Thin trading. Fewer buyers and sellers mean wider bid-ask spreads and partial or missed fills.
  • Limit orders only. Market orders and opening or closing auction orders are rejected.
  • 4:00 am cancellation. Orders still open at 4:00 am ET (2:30 pm IST in winter, 1:30 pm from 15 March) are cancelled.
  • Price bands, no pauses. A stock cannot trade more than 20% below the lower, or 20% above the higher, of its official close and its last round-lot trade as of 7:30 pm ET (6:00 am IST in winter; an SEC order of 7 October 2026 moved this from 7:45 pm). For stocks that closed at US$1 or more, each band is at least US$3 from its reference price. There are no automatic trading pauses.

What it means for your US investments

The trading hour changes no Indian rule: money still goes out under the Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS), up to US$250,000 per financial year, through Indian banks on their working days, and cannot fund margin or derivatives. Gains on shares held 24 months or less are still taxed at your slab rate (12.5% plus surcharge and cess if held longer).
