Estimate your trading charges

Estimated trading charges on a trade

Enter a trade value to estimate the trading charges and the effective rate. What the estimate leaves out is listed below it.

Order type

Buy orders carry no SEC or FINRA fee.

  • Brokerage$2.90
  • IGST 18% on brokerage$0.52
  • IFSCA turnover fee$0.05
  • SEC fee sell orders only$0.00
Estimated trading charges$3.47
Estimated effective rate0.35%

This is an estimate of trading charges only. It leaves out your bank’s currency conversion rate and margin, set by your remitting bank, not by us; your bank’s remittance fee and any intermediary bank charges; the FINRA fee on sales, explained below; TCS on LRS remittances above ₹10 lakh in a financial year; tax on gains and dividends. Your bank’s currency conversion is not included — the rate and margin are set by your remitting bank, not by us. FINRA’s fee on sales is $0.000195 per share sold. It is excluded from the calculator because it depends on share count rather than trade value. Figures are an estimate, not tax or investment advice. Risk disclosure

Tax

What the tax office takes

Four things apply to Indian residents investing abroad. Two can be credited against your Indian tax, within the limits set out below; one only bites above a threshold that a growing portfolio eventually crosses.

TCS when you send money abroad

TCS applies at 20% on money remitted under the LRS above ₹10,00,000 in a financial year. That threshold counts every LRS purpose together — travel, education, gifts and investing — not just what you send to invest.

Worked example

Remit ₹15,00,000 across a financial year and TCS applies to the ₹5,00,000 above the threshold: ₹1,00,000.

TCS: a timing cost, not a fee. It is credited against your tax when you file your return; until then the money is out of your hands.

Capital gains when you sell

Gains are taxed at your slab rate if you sell within 24 months, and at 12.5% (without indexation) after that, plus surcharge and cess. ETFs and GIFT City structures can be taxed differently. Tax depends on your situation; check with a tax adviser.

Sold within 24 months

Your income slabassumed 30%, the highest slab

₹30,000

Held past 24 months

12.5% flatlong-term capital gains, without indexation

₹12,500

Both figures are estimates of base tax. They compare two rates on the same gain and are not a suggestion to delay a sale: the gain itself can rise or fall while you hold.

Assumptions: the gain you enter is your whole taxable gain, in rupees; short-term gains are taxed at 30%, the highest slab, and your slab may be lower; long-term gains at 12.5% without indexation. Surcharge and cess are not included, so both figures understate what you would owe. ETFs and GIFT City structures can be taxed differently. An estimate, not tax advice. Risk disclosure

US estate tax, above a threshold

US-situs assets — which includes US shares held by a non-resident — fall under US estate tax above a USD 60,000 exemption, at rates reaching 40%. The India–US treaty does not relieve it. It is the one item here that a growing portfolio grows into rather than one you meet on day one, and it is widely under-discussed.

What the threshold means for you

Dividends

US dividends are withheld at 25% when a Form W-8BEN is on file, otherwise 30%. You can claim the US tax already paid as a Foreign Tax Credit under the DTAA, up to the Indian tax on that dividend; if your slab rate is below 25%, part of it cannot be recovered.
