Key takeaways

  • 2027 (NYSE): 10 full closures and one early close (Friday 26 November, 11:30 pm IST). No early close on 2 July or 23 December; Friday 31 December 2027 is a full trading day.
  • Under current US law, the IST session runs 8:00 pm–2:30 am from 2 November 2026, 7:00 pm–1:30 am from 15 March 2027 and 8:00 pm–2:30 am again from 8 November 2027.
  • Settlement (T+1) skips US market and bank holidays: a sale on 10 November 2026 settles on 12 November. Only settled cash can be withdrawn.
  • Indian holidays such as Diwali do not close US markets, but Indian bank holidays can delay an LRS remittance.

“Observed” dates stand in for holidays that fall on a weekend. New Year’s Day 2028 is a Saturday and is not observed, so Friday 31 December 2027 is a full trading day, and NYSE lists no early close on 2 July or 23 December. That leaves 251 trading days, unless NYSE adds a closure, as it did on Thursday 9 January 2025 for a national day of mourning for former President Jimmy Carter.

Veterans Day (11 November) and 31 December are normal trading days. The next closure after Christmas is Friday 1 January 2027.

Early closes: Black Friday and Christmas Eve in IST

All three early closes, on Black Friday (27 November 2026 and 26 November 2027) and Christmas Eve 2026, fall in US standard time, so the session ends at 1:00 pm ET, or 11:30 pm IST. NYSE’s late (after-hours) sessions, on its Arca, American, National and Texas markets, close at 5:00 pm ET, 3:30 am IST the next morning, if your broker offers them.

When the Indian timing changes (daylight saving)

The session stays at 9:30 am–4:00 pm ET all year (1:00 pm on early-close days), but US clocks change on the second Sunday of March and the first Sunday of November (15 U.S.C. § 260a), and India’s do not. The next changes are on 1 November 2026, 14 March 2027 and 7 November 2027.

A bill to make daylight saving time permanent, H.R. 139, passed the US House of Representatives on 14 July 2026 but has not passed the Senate, so it is not law. If it is enacted, US clocks would stop changing and, from the date it takes effect, the 8:00 pm–2:30 am and 11:30 pm IST times in this article would come an hour earlier. For daily hours, see US market timings in India.

How holidays delay settlement (T+1)

Since 28 May 2024, a US Securities and Exchange Commission rule has required most trades to settle by the first business day after the trade date (T+1). The trade date is the US date of the session: a fill at 12:30 am IST on Good Friday, 26 March 2027, belongs to Thursday 25 March. Banks must be open too. On Veterans Day, 11 November 2026, shares trade but banks are shut, and the clearing house, the National Securities Clearing Corporation (NSCC), says “there is no settlement”.

Inferred dates apply NSCC’s 2026 notices (no settlement on Veterans Day, or on 3 July 2026, when markets and NSCC were shut but banks open) to the Federal Reserve’s 2027 holiday list.

Orders, settled cash and withdrawals

US-listed shares trade on US markets, so the US calendar applies whichever GIFT City app you use. Platizio Global’s FAQ, for example, says ViewTrade IFSC “executes, clears and holds US trades through ViewTrade Securities Inc. in the US”. Whether an app queues orders placed on a US holiday depends on the broker.

The same FAQ says buying power “can include both settled and unsettled cash for placing new buy orders, but you can only withdraw cash once it has settled”, and that funds “typically reach your bank account within 1–3 business days after the broker processes the request”. So a sale filled at 1:00 am IST on Thursday 26 November 2026 belongs to Wednesday’s session and settles on Friday 27 November; only then can you ask to withdraw, and weekends and bank holidays may add days (how withdrawals to India work).

Indian holidays, bank holidays and LRS remittances

Indian holidays do not close US markets: in 2026, NSE and NYSE share only Good Friday (3 April) and Christmas (25 December). On Dussehra, 20 October 2026, NSE and Mumbai’s banks were shut but NYSE traded normally. NSE lists Diwali (Laxmi Pujan) on Sunday 8 November. RBI’s bank-holiday list spreads Diwali over 9–11 November by centre: Monday 9 November in Jaipur and Lucknow, for example, and Tuesday 10 November in Mumbai, Ahmedabad and Bengaluru. It lists Guru Nanak Jayanti, also an NSE holiday, on 24 November in Mumbai, New Delhi and other centres. The US market trades 8:00 pm–2:30 am IST on 9, 10, 11 and 24 November.

Bank holidays matter for funding: money sent under the Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS), up to US$250,000 per financial year, leaves through an Indian bank. The same FAQ says remittances from integrated partner banks “initiated before the 1:30 PM cut-off on a working day are typically credited fastest; those initiated after the cut-off, on a bank holiday, or from other banks typically take longer”. So a Mumbai transfer started on Tuesday 10 November may be credited later. RBI and NSE had not published 2027 holiday lists by 22 October 2026 (sending money under the LRS).
