SpaceX shares trade on Nasdaq as SPCX after an initial public offering (IPO) on 12 June 2026 at US$135. Resident Indians can buy them under the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS) through an app in GIFT City, India’s International Financial Services Centre, or an overseas broker, but not at the IPO price: the prospectus ruled out any public offer in India (US IPOs from India). SPCX closed at US$159.31 on 21 October 2026, about ₹15,089 at the RBI reference rate of ₹94.7145.

Can Indians buy SpaceX shares?

Yes. On 22 October 2026, GIFT City apps INDmoney and Tickertape and overseas broker Vested offered fractional SPCX shares. Other GIFT City apps include Dhan, Upstox and Platizio Global (GIFT City apps compared); check that yours lists SPCX.

Indian funds. Motilal Oswal’s Nasdaq 100 exchange-traded fund (MON100), listed on NSE and BSE, held 2.71% in SpaceX on 30 September 2026; the firm’s Nasdaq 100 fund of funds has paused inflows since January 2025 (Nasdaq-100 routes).

Not SpaceX shares (22 October 2026): pre-IPO “units” (stakes in a vehicle); Mudrex’s “SPCXB” (a “tokenized bStock” said to represent SpaceX) and “SPACEX” (linked only by name) tokens, whose legal status in India is unsettled; and offshore brokers’ leveraged contracts for difference (CFDs). LRS bars remittances “for margins or margin calls” abroad. Check RBI’s authorised-platform list and its Alert List (updated 19 November 2025), which “is not exhaustive”.

How SPCX is taxed in India

  • TCS: nil on the first ₹10 lakh of LRS remittances a financial year, across banks; banks collect 20% on the excess (section 394(1), Income-tax Act, 2025): ₹1,00,000 on ₹15 lakh, credited in your return (TCS on LRS).
  • Capital gains: long-term only after more than 24 months, so not before 13 June 2028: 12.5% without indexation, plus surcharge and cess (section 197), with no ₹1.25 lakh exemption; earlier gains at slab rates.
  • Dividends: none ever paid; any would face 25% US withholding with a W-8BEN, credited via Form 44.
  • Schedule FA (the return’s foreign-assets schedule): report SPCX held at any time in calendar year 2026, at any value. No ₹10 lakh Black Money Act penalty applies if foreign assets other than immovable property total ₹20 lakh or less.
  • US estate tax: above US$60,000 of US assets (about 377 SPCX shares), a non-resident’s estate can owe up to 40%.

Short-term example: 10 shares bought at US$149.47 (7 July 2026 close) and sold at US$159.31 (21 October) gain US$98.40, or ₹9,389 at ₹95.42 (SBI’s TT buying rate on 30 September, Rule 206; the conversion method is unsettled). Tax at a 30% slab plus 4% cess, without surcharge or fees: ₹2,929.
