How to buy Microsoft shares: the steps

  1. Open an account with PAN, Aadhaar and Form W-8BEN (declaring you are not a US person), cutting US dividend tax from 30% to 25%.
  2. Remit under LRS from a bank account in your name.
  3. Order by dollar amount for a fraction; some apps take limit and stop orders only for whole shares.
  4. Trade in US hours: 7:00 pm–1:30 am IST until Friday 30 October 2026, then 8:00 pm–2:30 am IST from Monday 2 November (US market timings). Settlement is T+1 (next business day).

What a ₹50,000 purchase costs

One GIFT City app’s published fees (22 October 2026), with MSFT for illustration only:

ItemAmount
₹50,000 at the RBI reference rate (₹94.7145)US$527.90
Brokerage 0.29% (minimum US$1), 18% IGST on it, 0.005% IFSCA feeUS$1.83 (about ₹174)
Exchange-rate cost: SBI’s telegraphic transfer (TT) selling rate, ₹95.05, is 0.35% higherAbout ₹176
GST on the currency conversion₹90
All-in cost; 0.98 share boughtAbout ₹440 (0.88%)

Bank charges and markups vary: SBI’s rate is for ₹10–20 lakh; HDFC Bank’s ₹1,000 remittance fee plus GST (22 October 2026) would add ₹1,180. As banks charge TCS on LRS, remitting ₹15 lakh in 2026-27 means 20% × (₹15,00,000 − ₹10,00,000) = ₹1,00,000 collected, credited against your tax.

Microsoft dividend and tax in India

Microsoft raised its quarterly dividend 8% to US$0.98 on 15 September 2026: ex-dividend date 19 November (buy by 2:30 am IST that day), payment 10 December. The US withholds 25% with a W-8BEN; India taxes the gross dividend at your slab, crediting the US tax up to the Indian tax (Form 44 for this dividend, tax year 2026-27; dividend tax).

Slab (plus 4% cess, no surcharge)Kept per US$0.98
30%US$0.674 (68.8%)
25%US$0.725 (74.0%)
20% or lowerUS$0.735 (75.0%)

Under the Income-tax Act, 2025 (rupee values at SBI’s TT buying rate, Rule 206):

  • Capital gains are long-term only after more than 24 months: 12.5% plus surcharge and cess (section 197), with no ₹1.25 lakh exemption; otherwise your slab. Ten shares bought at US$420.69 on 1 October 2024 and sold at US$532.95 on 21 October 2026 gain ₹1,07,118 (tax ₹13,925 before surcharge) converting the dollar gain at ₹95.42 (30 September 2026), or ₹1,58,106 (tax ₹20,554) converting each leg (cost at ₹83.30, 30 September 2024); the method is unsettled (CA to confirm).
  • Schedule FA (foreign assets): report the shares for every calendar year held. The ₹10 lakh Black Money Act penalty does not apply if foreign assets other than immovable property total ₹20 lakh or less.
  • US estate tax: non-resident non-citizens get only US$60,000 of US-situs assets free, about 112.6 MSFT shares; rates reach 40%.

Microsoft stock risks

  • OpenAI: the 10-K reports “an approximate 25% interest on an as-converted basis” (equity method) and US$24.1 billion of fiscal 2026 revenue from commercial arrangements with OpenAI, including revenue-sharing payments (7.3% of revenue).
  • AI spending is “in advance of fully developed revenue streams”, the 10-K says.
  • Swings and currency: MSFT fell 9.99% on 29 January 2026 and rose 15.51% on 30 July, after results; rupee moves cut both ways.
