Can you invest in Amazon (AMZN) stock from India?
Yes. LRS lets a resident individual send up to US$250,000 per financial year (April–March) abroad, including to GIFT City platforms. A GIFT City app opens your account with an intermediary in India’s International Financial Services Centre (IFSC), regulated by the International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA).
GIFT City apps include Tickertape, Upstox and Platizio Global. On 22 October 2026, AMZN pages at Tickertape, Upstox, INDmoney and Vested said residents can buy it, three from US$1 in fractions. Check your app lists AMZN before you remit.

Amazon’s latest results
| Quarter to 30 June 2026 | Figure |
|---|---|
| Net sales | US$200.6 billion, up 20% year on year |
| AWS (Amazon Web Services) sales | US$42.2 billion, up 37% |
| Operating income | US$27.5 billion, up 43% |
| Net income | US$62.6 billion, from US$18.2 billion |

Net income included US$53.4 billion of pre-tax other income, “primarily from our investments in Anthropic”, an artificial intelligence (AI) company; about US$50.5 billion of it came from revaluing that stake (10-Q). Amazon puts the outflow down to a US$66.1 billion year-on-year rise in spending on property and equipment, mainly for AI.
Amazon through Indian funds or NSE IFSC receipts
India-listed exchange-traded funds (ETFs) with some Amazon traded above their net asset value (NAV) on 21 October 2026:
| ETF | Amazon weight, 30 September (sharpely) | Above NAV, 21 October |
|---|---|---|
| Mirae Asset NYSE FANG+ (MAFANG) | 9.77% | 51.9% |
| Mirae Asset S&P 500 Top 50 | 5.79% | 53.7% |
| Motilal Oswal Nasdaq 100 | 4.08% | 11.7% |
Premiums compare NSE closes with NAVs from mfapi.in, a mirror of AMFI data. At MAFANG’s premium, ₹50,000 bought only about ₹3,217 of Amazon (our calculation). Under SEBI’s US$7 billion industry cap, only 1 of 60 overseas equity funds was open on 4 September 2026 (Value Research); ICICI Prudential NASDAQ 100 Index Fund has refused lump sums and new SIPs since 27 January 2026.
NSE IFSC receipts on Amazon, traded on NSE IX in GIFT City, have taken no buy orders since 30 July 2026. Holders can convert them into whole AMZN shares until 20 January 2027 or sell until 29 January; dealing ends on 1 February 2027 (what receipt holders must do).
Products that are not Amazon shares
LRS money cannot fund margin or derivatives, and none of these is an AMZN share held for you:
- Contracts for difference (CFDs): leveraged bets on the price. IG’s and Capital.com’s own pages say 80% and 79.75% of their retail accounts lose money (22 October 2026).
- Tokenised stocks such as Amazon xStock (AMZNx): tokens from a Jersey issuer, Backed Assets (JE) Limited, “not registered under the U.S. Securities Act”; you own the token, not an AMZN share. Some “Amazon share price in INR” results quote these tokens.
- Perpetual futures (“perps”) on crypto exchanges: leveraged derivatives on the price.
How to buy Amazon shares in India: the steps
- Open an account: KYC with PAN and Aadhaar, plus Form W-8BEN, which certifies you are not a US person.
- Remit under LRS from your own bank account.
- Place the order: a dollar amount buys a fraction. A market order fills at the current price, which can jump: AMZN rose 15.32% on 31 July 2026 and fell 5.55% on 6 February 2026, each the day after results. Some apps allow limit orders only on whole shares.
- Trade in US hours: 7:00 pm–1:30 am IST until Friday 30 October 2026, then 8:00 pm–2:30 am IST from Monday 2 November, after US clocks change on 1 November (US market timings). Trades settle the next business day (T+1).
What a ₹50,000 purchase costs
This example, with AMZN for illustration only, uses one GIFT City app’s published fees (read 22 October 2026) and SBI’s rate for 21 October; others charge differently.
| Item | Working | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| App fees | On ₹50,000 ÷ ₹94.7145 (RBI rate) = US$527.90: brokerage 0.29% (minimum US$1) US$1.531, IGST 18% on it US$0.276, IFSCA fee 0.005% US$0.026 | US$1.833 (0.35%), about ₹174 |
| Exchange-rate cost | SBI’s telegraphic transfer (TT) selling rate, ₹95.05, gives US$526.04, or US$1.86 less | about ₹176 |
| GST on the conversion | 0.18% × ₹50,000 | ₹90 |
| All-in cost | ₹174 + ₹176 + ₹90 | about ₹440 (0.88%) |
| AMZN bought | (US$526.04 − US$1.83) ÷ US$262.37 | 1.998 shares |
Bank charges and markups vary; SBI’s card rates are for ₹10–20 lakh (for less, it says to ask a branch).
TCS on LRS affects cash flow: as banks charge it, remitting ₹15 lakh in 2026-27 means 20% × (₹15,00,000 − ₹10,00,000) = ₹1,00,000 collected, claimed against tax in your return.
How Amazon shares are taxed in India
For residents in tax year 2026-27 (Income-tax Act, 2025):
- Capital gains: long-term only after more than 24 months, then 12.5% without indexation (section 197) plus surcharge and cess, with no ₹1.25 lakh exemption; short-term gains at your slab rate (tax on US stocks via GIFT City). On a ₹1 lakh gain, with 4% cess: ₹13,000 long-term, or ₹31,200 short-term at the 30% slab.
- Exchange rate: Rule 206 uses SBI’s TT buying rate for the last day of the month before the sale; how to convert the purchase cost is unsettled, so ask a CA.
- Dividends: none ever paid.
- Schedule FA, your return’s foreign-assets schedule: report AMZN for every calendar year (January–December) you hold it, at any value. The ₹10 lakh Black Money Act penalty does not apply if foreign assets other than immovable property total ₹20 lakh or less (about 80 AMZN shares on 21 October).
- US estate tax: non-residents who are not US citizens get only US$60,000 of US assets free, about 229 AMZN shares on 21 October; rates reach 40%.
Risks to weigh
- Spending and debt: negative free cash flow, and long-term debt nearly doubled in six months.
- Profit sources: net income leaned on the Anthropic revaluation, and Amazon warns such valuations “could change rapidly”; AWS earned 60.5% of second-quarter operating income (our calculation).
- Competition and lawsuits: competition “continues to intensify”; antitrust cases seek “billions of dollars”, which Amazon disputes.
- Currency: returns are in dollars, so rupee moves can raise or cut your gain.
