US semiconductor stocks are chip companies listed on Nasdaq or the New York Stock Exchange: designers such as Nvidia and AMD, contract manufacturer TSMC, memory makers Micron and (since July 2026) SK hynix, and equipment makers such as ASML. Indian residents can buy them, or chip exchange-traded funds (ETFs) such as SMH and SOXX, under the Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS) through GIFT City apps or overseas brokers. Gains are long-term only after more than 24 months (taxed at 12.5%), and holdings must be reported in Schedule FA.
Key takeaways
- On 15 October 2026, Nvidia was 20.06% of SMH but 7.76% of SOXX.
- The PHLX Semiconductor index fell 46.5% in 2021–22 and 28.6% in June–July 2026.
- Our ₹50,000 example costs about 0.8% to get in (0.35% in app fees) and 1.9% round trip.
- No Indian fund has “semiconductor” in its name (AMFI, 16 October 2026).
What counts as a “US semiconductor stock”?
It means where shares trade, not where a company is based. TSMC (TSM), Arm (ARM) and, since July 2026, SK hynix (SKHY) trade in New York as American depositary receipts or shares (ADRs or ADSs): dollar certificates for shares held abroad. One SKHY is one-tenth of an SK hynix share; ASML trades on Nasdaq as “New York Registry Shares”. SMH and SOXX both hold all four.

Stages include design software (EDA) and licensed designs (IP); fabless designers, which outsource manufacturing to foundries; equipment makers; and integrated device manufacturers (IDMs), which design and make their own chips.

SMH vs SOXX. SMH’s index favours the largest companies, while SOXX spreads its weight more evenly. On 15 October 2026, ₹1,00,000 in SMH held ₹20,060 of Nvidia, against ₹7,760 in SOXX, so a 30% fall in Nvidia alone would cut SMH by about 6.0% and SOXX by 2.3%.
SOXX split. SOXX splits 3-for-1 (each unit becomes three) after the close on 4 November 2026: record date 3 November, split-adjusted trading from 5 November (SEC filing).
SOXL and SOXS seek 3x and −3x the NYSE Semiconductor Index’s daily return; Direxion warns they should not be expected to deliver that “for periods greater than a day” (see our leveraged ETF guide).
What is driving chip sales in 2026?
Chip sales passed US$1 trillion in January–August 2026 (Semiconductor Industry Association, 5 October 2026). World Semiconductor Trade Statistics’ June forecast for 2026, US$1,511.2 billion, is more than half memory. For AI spending, see our guide to US AI stocks.
What are the risks of semiconductor stocks?
Deep, repeated falls. The PHLX Semiconductor index (SOX), which SOXQ tracks, on Nasdaq daily closes:
| Episode | Peak to trough | Fall |
|---|---|---|
| Dot-com | Mar 2000–Oct 2002 | −83.9% |
| Financial crisis | Jul 2007–Nov 2008 | −68.7% |
| 2022 | Dec 2021–Oct 2022 | −46.5% |
| 2024–25 | Jul 2024–Apr 2025 | −39.7% |
| 2026 | 22 Jun–29 Jul 2026 | −28.6% |
It regained its 2000 peak only in November 2017. On 16 October 2026 it was 23.9% below its June high and 13.2% below its 1 October close.
- Concentration. Nvidia was a fifth of SMH, and a Nasdaq-100 fund adds more: 8.14% of QQQ on 16 October 2026 (stockanalysis.com).
- Policy, mid-October 2026. Since 15 January 2026, a 25% US tariff has applied to certain advanced computing chips, exempting imports for US data centres, research, start-ups and consumer, industrial or public-sector use (Proclamation 11002), and licences to export Nvidia’s H200 and equivalents to China get case-by-case review, not presumed denial (BIS rule).
- Taiwan. Taiwan-based TSMC was 9.32% of SMH and 3.07% of SOXX.
- Currency. A stronger rupee shrinks your returns in rupees.
How to invest in US semiconductor stocks from India
Under the LRS, residents may remit up to US$250,000 a financial year, including to GIFT City (India’s International Financial Services Centre), for US shares and ETFs, but not for margin trading or derivatives. GIFT City apps include Groww (0.1% brokerage, minimum US$1), INDmoney (0.25%, maximum US$25, or US$0 on its “Direct Access (NSEIX)” route), Upstox (0.25%, maximum US$25) and Platizio Global (0.29%, minimum US$1), plus GST, per their own pricing pages (19 October 2026).
| ₹50,000 purchase (illustrative) | Amount |
|---|---|
| Dollars at the RBI reference rate, ₹95.0194 (16 October 2026) | US$526.21 |
| Fees: 0.29% brokerage plus 18% IGST; IFSCA (GIFT City regulator) fee 0.005% | US$1.83 (0.35%), about ₹174 |
| SBI’s telegraphic-transfer (TT) selling rate, ₹95.40 (16 October 2026): 0.40% above reference | About ₹200 |
| GST on conversion | ₹90 |
| All-in entry cost | About ₹464 (0.93%) |
Bank charges and markups vary: SBI’s card rate is for ₹10–20 lakh transfers, so a ₹50,000 transfer may get a worse rate. Selling at the same price and converting back at SBI’s ₹94.55 TT buying rate: about ₹970 (1.9%) round trip. Assumes in-app funding, no TCS.
US markets open 7:00 pm–1:30 am IST until 30 October 2026, then 8:00 pm–2:30 am from 2 November; trades settle T+1.
Tax and reporting in brief
- Capital gains: long-term only after more than 24 months, taxed at 12.5% plus surcharge and cess (section 197), without indexation or the ₹1.25 lakh exemption; short-term at slab rates.
- Dividends: taxed at slab. US companies and ETFs withhold 25% with Form W-8BEN (a non-US-person declaration; 30% without), credited up to the Indian tax via Form 67 (FY 2025-26 income) or Form 44 (tax year 2026-27 onwards). Foreign-company ADR dividends bear home-country tax instead, such as Korea’s 22.0% (or a treaty rate) for SK hynix; ask a chartered accountant (CA).
- TCS: banks collect 20% on LRS remittances above ₹10 lakh in a financial year (₹10,000 on a further ₹50,000), credited in your return.
- Schedule FA: report every foreign holding at any time in the calendar year; the ₹10 lakh Black Money Act penalty does not apply if non-property foreign assets total ₹20 lakh or less.
- US estate tax: non-residents get only US$60,000 of US shares and ETFs free of it, and rates reach 40%; ask a CA about foreign companies’ ADRs.
India’s chip push and Indian funds
Micron’s assembly and test plant at Sanand, Gujarat, began commercial production in February 2026, and in July 2026 the Cabinet approved Semicon 2.0 (outlay ₹1,27,500 crore; India Semiconductor Mission). Yet no Indian fund has “semiconductor” in its name (AMFI, 16 October 2026), only 1 of 60 overseas equity funds took new money (Value Research, 4 September 2026), and NSE IX’s US-stock receipts have taken no new buys since 30 July 2026.
