Apple is not listed in India: Apple India Private Limited is a private subsidiary, and NSE’s trade report (bhavcopy) for 21 October 2026 has no Apple symbol. Residents buy Apple Inc.’s Nasdaq-listed shares, ticker AAPL, by sending money under the Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS) to a GIFT City app or an overseas broker. AAPL closed at US$343.99 on 21 October 2026, about ₹32,581 at the RBI reference rate.
Key takeaways
- How to buy Apple shares in India: open a GIFT City app or overseas broker account, remit under LRS (up to US$250,000 a financial year) and buy AAPL, in fractions from about US$1 on several apps.
- ₹50,000 of AAPL cost about ₹440 (0.88%) all-in on 21 October 2026, at one app’s fees and SBI’s card rate.
- The US$0.27 quarterly dividend arrives as US$0.2025 after 25% US withholding (with Form W-8BEN); India taxes the gross, with credit.
- Gains are long-term only after more than 24 months (12.5% plus surcharge and cess). Banks collect 20% tax at source (TCS) on the part of LRS remittances above ₹10 lakh a financial year.

Ways to invest in Apple stock from India
With a GIFT City app, a broker regulated by the International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA) holds the AAPL shares in its name for the benefit of its customers (an omnibus account), not in your own name and outside any Indian demat account. Such apps include Tickertape, INDmoney, Upstox and Platizio Global; on 22 October 2026 the first three had AAPL pages, and Tickertape and INDmoney sold fractions from US$1. Check that your app offers AAPL stock. Overseas platforms Vested and Paasa also offered Apple that day.
Indian exchange-traded funds (ETFs) holding Apple traded well above net asset value (NAV) on 21 October 2026 (our calculation: NSE closes, AMFI NAVs via the mfapi.in mirror, sharpely weights at 30 September):
| ETF | Apple weight | Premium to NAV |
|---|---|---|
| Motilal Oswal Nasdaq 100 (MON100) | 7.38% | 11.7% |
| Mirae Asset NYSE FANG+ (MAFANG) | 9.66% | 51.9% |
| Mirae Asset S&P 500 Top 50 (MASPTOP50) | 11.50% | 53.7% |
At its premium, ₹50,000 of MAFANG bought ₹32,926 of the fund’s assets, ₹3,181 of it Apple. Most Indian overseas funds are closed under SEBI’s US$7 billion industry cap (Value Research: 1 of 60 overseas equity funds open on 4 September 2026).
Products that are not Apple shares
Perpetual futures (“perps”) on crypto apps, contracts for difference and other derivatives only track Apple’s price: you own no share, and a leveraged position can be liquidated. LRS money cannot be used for derivatives, margin or margin calls overseas. Indian-listed companies with “Apple” in their name or symbol are not Apple Inc.
How to buy Apple shares in India: the steps
- Open an account with PAN and Aadhaar KYC, and sign Form W-8BEN, which certifies you are not a US person and cuts US tax on dividends from 30% to the treaty rate of 25%.
- Remit under LRS from your own bank account: up to US$250,000 per financial year (April–March), all purposes combined.
- Order AAPL by dollar amount (a fraction) or number of shares; some apps take limit and stop orders only for whole shares.
- Trade in US hours: 7:00 pm–1:30 am Indian time (IST) until Friday 30 October 2026, then 8:00 pm–2:30 am IST from Monday 2 November (US market timings). The market shuts on 26 November and 25 December and closes at 11:30 pm IST on 27 November and 24 December. Trades settle the next business day (T+1).
What a ₹50,000 Apple purchase costs
This uses one GIFT City app’s published fees (22 October 2026); other apps charge differently.
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Order: ₹50,000 ÷ ₹94.7145 (RBI reference rate, 21 October 2026) | US$527.90 |
| Brokerage: 0.29% × US$527.90 (minimum US$1) | US$1.531 |
| IGST: 18% × US$1.531 | US$0.276 |
| IFSCA fee: 0.005% × US$527.90 | US$0.026 |
| Total fees | US$1.833 (0.35%), about ₹174 |
| Bank’s rate: SBI’s telegraphic transfer (TT) selling rate, ₹95.05 on 21 October, is 0.35% above the RBI rate | about ₹176 |
| GST on the currency conversion: 0.18% × ₹50,000 | ₹90 |
| All-in: ₹174 + ₹176 + ₹90 | about ₹440 (0.88%) |
After the bank’s rate and fees, ₹50,000 buys about 1.52 shares (our calculation). Bank charges and markups vary: SBI’s card rate is for ₹10–20 lakh transfers, and a fee such as HDFC Bank’s ₹1,000 plus GST (above US$500) adds ₹1,180.
TCS on LRS is a cash-flow cost: as banks charge it, ₹15 lakh remitted in 2026-27 means 20% × (₹15,00,000 − ₹10,00,000) = ₹1,00,000 collected, credited against tax in your return (Form 168).
Apple’s dividend and buybacks
Apple currently pays US$0.27 a share a quarter (raised 4% on 30 April 2026; last paid 13 August). With a W-8BEN, US$0.2025 reaches you after 25% US withholding. India taxes the gross at your slab, crediting US tax up to the Indian tax (our calculation, before surcharge):
| Your slab | Indian tax with 4% cess | You keep of the gross |
|---|---|---|
| 30% | 31.2%, less 25% US credit | 68.8% (US$0.186 a share a quarter) |
| 20% | 20.8%, covered by US credit | 75% (US$0.2025) |
| 10% | 10.4%, covered by US credit | 75% (US$0.2025) |
Apple added a US$100 billion buyback authorisation on 30 April 2026. In the nine months to 27 June it bought back 215 million shares for US$61.8 billion, and its share count fell 1.23% between 17 October 2025 and 17 July 2026 (our calculation).
How Apple shares are taxed in India
For residents in tax year 2026-27 (Income-tax Act, 2025), with rupee values at SBI’s TT buying rate (Rule 206); details in tax on US stocks via GIFT City:
- Capital gains are long-term only after more than 24 months: 12.5% without indexation (section 197) plus surcharge and cess, with no ₹1.25 lakh exemption; otherwise slab rates. Selling one share at US$343.99 on 21 October 2026, with the dollar gain converted at ₹95.42, SBI’s TT buying rate on 30 September, the month-end before the sale (our calculation, with 4% cess): bought for US$173.00 on 23 October 2023, about ₹2,121 tax on a ₹16,316 long-term gain; bought for US$262.77 on 21 October 2025, about ₹2,418 on a ₹7,750 short-term gain at the 30% slab. Some advisers convert the cost at the purchase-date rate; the method is unsettled (CA to confirm).
- Dividend credit: Form 67 for FY 2025-26 income (due 31 March 2027); Form 44 from tax year 2026-27 (due 31 March 2028).
- Schedule FA: report the shares for every calendar year you hold them, at any value. The ₹10 lakh Black Money Act penalty does not apply if foreign assets other than immovable property total ₹20 lakh or less (about 61 AAPL shares).
- US estate tax: non-residents who are not US citizens get only US$60,000 of US-situs assets, such as US shares, free (about 174 AAPL shares); rates reach 40%.
Risks Apple flags in its filings
- One product: iPhone was 49.6% of June-quarter revenue; Apple says a fall in its demand “could significantly impact net sales and gross margins”.
- Supply and costs: outsourcing partners mainly in China mainland, India, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and Vietnam make substantially all its hardware; the quarter’s 50.1% gross margin included about 2 points of tariff refunds; and Apple expects rising component costs to “intensify”.
- Legal: a reversal on appeal in the US search case could bar Google from offering Apple commercial terms for search distribution; App Store cases continue in the US and EU.
- Price and currency: AAPL fell 7.35% on 31 July 2026, the day after results. A 7.89% rise in the dollar from 20 October 2025 to 21 October 2026 lifted AAPL’s 31.17% dollar gain to 41.53% in rupees (our calculation); a stronger rupee would cut returns. One stock also concentrates risk.
