Meta Platforms, owner of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, is listed on Nasdaq as META, not in India, and its Indian subsidiary is unlisted. A resident can buy META under the Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS) through a GIFT City app or an overseas broker. It closed at US$697.52 (about ₹66,065) on 21 October 2026, before Meta’s results.

Key takeaways

  • How to buy Meta shares in India: remit under LRS to a GIFT City app or overseas broker, then buy META.
  • Meta has declared one non-voting Class C share per share, payable after 19 January 2027, and expects the Class A price to fall about 50%.
  • ₹50,000 of META costs about ₹440 (0.88%) at one app’s fees and SBI’s rate; banks collect 20% tax at source (TCS) only on LRS remittances above ₹10 lakh a financial year.
  • Residents keep 68.8–75% of the US$0.525 quarterly dividend after US and Indian tax, before surcharge.

Can you buy Meta shares from India?

Yes, under LRS (up to US$250,000 a financial year). A GIFT City app holds your shares in the name of an intermediary regulated by the International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA); an overseas broker, in your own account.

GIFT City apps include Tickertape, INDmoney, Upstox, Appreciate and Platizio Global. On 22 October 2026, Tickertape’s and INDmoney’s META pages said investors could start from US$1; check that your app lists META.

NSE IX has taken no new buys of its US-share receipts since 30 July 2026; holders can sell until 29 January 2027 or convert into US shares until 20 January 2027.

Meta’s Class C shares: what happens in January 2027

On 19 October 2026 Meta’s board declared “a one-time stock dividend” of one non-voting Class C share for each listed Class A share and 10-vote Class B share, under a new charter that Mark Zuckerberg’s entities approved on 20 October.

  • Dates: the charter takes effect on 19 January 2027; payment is due by the fifth business day after (26 January 2027 at the latest, by our count), on a record date not yet set.
  • Price: Meta expects the Class A price “to reflect the effect of a two-for-one stock split”, falling about 50%, with Class C priced about the same.
  • Rights: as Class A, including cash dividends, but no vote. Meta intends a Nasdaq listing (no ticker yet) and “expects to conduct offerings of Class C common stock from time to time”, diluting existing holders.
  • Indian tax is unsettled: under section 2(101) of the Income-tax Act, 2025, the holding period of shares allotted without payment may start at allotment, and their cost is unconfirmed. Ask a chartered accountant, and your app how it will credit fractions.

How to buy Meta shares in India

  1. Open an account: PAN and Aadhaar KYC, a FATCA/CRS declaration and Form W-8BEN (for the 25% dividend rate).
  2. Remit under LRS from your own bank account.
  3. Order a dollar amount (a fraction) or whole shares; some apps allow limit orders only on whole shares.
  4. Trade in US hours: 7:00 pm–1:30 am IST until Friday 30 October 2026, then 8:00 pm–2:30 am IST from Monday 2 November (US market timings). Trades settle the next business day (T+1).

What a ₹50,000 purchase costs

Using one GIFT City app’s published fees (22 October 2026; others differ):

ItemWorkingAmount
Order₹50,000 ÷ ₹94.7145 (RBI reference rate, 21 October 2026)US$527.90
App fees0.29% brokerage, minimum US$1 (US$1.531) + 18% IGST (US$0.276) + 0.005% IFSCA fee (US$0.026)US$1.833 (0.35%), about ₹174

Bank charges and markups vary. As banks charge TCS on LRS, remitting ₹15 lakh in 2026-27 means 20% × (₹15,00,000 − ₹10,00,000) = ₹1,00,000 collected, claimed against tax in your return.

Meta dividend and tax in India

Meta pays US$0.525 a share a quarter (last paid 28 September 2026). The US withholds 25% with a W-8BEN (30% without); India taxes the gross dividend at your slab rate, crediting the US tax up to the Indian tax on it (Form 67 for FY 2025-26 income, Form No. 44 from tax year 2026-27). Before surcharge, you keep 68.8% at the 30% slab (with 4% cess) and 75% at 20% or below.

For tax year 2026-27 (rupee values at SBI’s TT buying rate, Rule 206):

  • Capital gains: long-term only after more than 24 months, then 12.5% (section 197) plus surcharge and cess, with no indexation or ₹1.25 lakh exemption; short-term at your slab rate (tax on US stocks via GIFT City).
  • Schedule FA: report META shares for every calendar year held, at any value. The ₹10 lakh Black Money Act penalty does not apply if foreign assets other than immovable property total ₹20 lakh or less (about 30 META shares).
  • US estate tax: non-resident aliens get only US$60,000 of US assets free (about 86 META shares); rates reach 40%.

Funds, and products that are not Meta shares

Most overseas equity funds take no new money (1 of 60 open on 4 September 2026, Value Research), and listed ETFs cost a premium: on 21 October 2026 the Mirae Asset NYSE FANG+ ETF (10 equal-weighted stocks, Meta included) closed 51.9% above its net asset value and the Mirae Asset S&P 500 Top 50 ETF 53.7% above (our calculation).

These are not META shares:

  • 2x daily ETFs FBL and METU fell 32.0% and 33.3% in price in the year to 21 October 2026, while META fell 4.9% (leveraged ETFs).
  • Roundhill META WeeklyPay ETF (METW) targets 120% of Meta’s weekly return; Roundhill says investing in it “is not an investment in the underlying stock”.
  • Tokens, contracts for difference and perpetual futures only track the price; LRS money cannot fund margin or derivatives.

Risks from Meta’s filings (21 October 2026)

  • Business: Meta gets “substantially all” its revenue from advertising and warns AI and Reality Labs spending cuts cash flow and margins.
  • Legal: on 21 October 2026 a New Mexico court imposed a US$25 billion civil penalty plus 15% post-judgment interest, which Meta intends to appeal; the August 2026 settlement provides up to about US$18.59 billion.
  • Control: Mark Zuckerberg had about 60.6% of the votes on 1 October 2026; Meta says Class C could prolong his control.
  • Volatility and currency: META moved −11.33%, +10.40%, −8.55% and −7.95% the day after its four previous results (Nasdaq closes); rupee moves cut both ways.
