How to buy Broadcom shares in India
GIFT City apps, which open your account with a broker in India’s International Financial Services Centre, include Tickertape, INDmoney and Platizio Global (their own websites, 22 October 2026); check that yours lists AVGO. NSE IX in GIFT City has taken no new buys of its Broadcom receipts since 30 July 2026; dealing ends on 1 February 2027 (NSE IFSC receipts are closing).
- Open an account with PAN and Aadhaar and sign Form W-8BEN, which certifies you are not a US person, cutting US dividend withholding from 30% to 25%.
- Remit under LRS from your own Indian bank account, for overseas portfolio investment.
- Buy AVGO by dollar amount (a fraction) or by share; on some apps, limit and stop orders take whole shares only.
- Trade in US hours: 7:00 pm–1:30 am Indian time (IST) until Friday 30 October 2026, then 8:00 pm–2:30 am IST from Monday 2 November (US clocks change on 1 November). Trades settle in one business day (T+1).
What a ₹50,000 purchase costs
At one GIFT City app’s published fees (read 22 October 2026); others differ:
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| ₹50,000 at ₹94.7145 (RBI reference rate, 21 October 2026) | US$527.90 |
| Brokerage 0.29% (minimum US$1) US$1.531, IGST (18% of brokerage) US$0.276, IFSCA (GIFT City regulator) fee 0.005% US$0.026 | US$1.833 (0.35%), about ₹174 |
| SBI’s telegraphic transfer (TT) selling rate, ₹95.05 on 21 October, 0.35% above the reference rate | about ₹176 |
| GST on the currency conversion (18% × 1% × ₹50,000) | ₹90 |
| All-in cost | about ₹440 (0.88%) |
Bank charges and markups vary; SBI’s card rate is for ₹10–20 lakh transfers. As banks charge TCS on LRS under section 394, remitting ₹15 lakh in 2026-27 means 20% × (₹15,00,000 − ₹10,00,000) = ₹1,00,000 collected, credited against tax in your return.
Broadcom dividend, buybacks and tax
Broadcom paid US$0.65 a share on 30 September 2026, its fiscal 2026 quarterly rate; the 10% rise in December 2025 made the US$2.60 annual target “the fifteenth consecutive increase in annual dividends”. Buybacks: US$8.45 billion in the three quarters to 2 August 2026, none in the third; US$10.1 billion of authority remains until 31 December 2026.
For tax year 2026-27 (Income-tax Act, 2025), with rupee values at SBI’s TT buying rate (Rule 206):
- Dividends: with a W-8BEN the US withholds 25%; India taxes the gross amount at your slab rate, crediting the US tax up to the Indian tax (Form 44). Ignoring surcharge, you keep 68.8% at the 30% slab (with 4% cess) and 75% at 20% or below.
- Capital gains: long-term only after more than 24 months, at 12.5% (section 197) plus surcharge and cess, with no ₹1.25 lakh exemption; short-term at your slab rate. On a ₹1 lakh gain, with 4% cess: ₹13,000 long-term, ₹31,200 short-term at the 30% slab (how US shares are taxed).
- Schedule FA, your return’s foreign-assets schedule: report the shares for each calendar year you hold them, at any value; the ₹10 lakh Black Money Act penalty does not apply if foreign assets other than immovable property total ₹20 lakh or less.
- US estate tax: non-resident non-citizens get only US$60,000 of US-situs assets free, about 178 AVGO shares; rates reach 40%.
Risks of owning Broadcom shares
- Customer concentration: one distributor took 50% of net revenue in the quarter to 2 August 2026; Broadcom believes its top five end customers took about 55% (10-Q, 10 September 2026).
- Foundry: about 95% of wafers made by its contract manufacturers in fiscal 2026 to 2 August came from Taiwan’s TSMC (same 10-Q).
- Debt: US$61.1 billion on 2 August 2026; Broadcom says its “substantial indebtedness could adversely affect our financial health”.
- Lease backstop: under its “AI XPV platform”, Broadcom backstops a customer’s five-year AI-rack lease obligations to a financial partner, with maximum potential liability of about US$29 billion once all racks are deployed (undiscounted); nothing had been paid (10-Q).
- Volatility and currency: AVGO’s close fell 31.7% from 2 June to 16 October 2026 (Nasdaq data); rupee moves add currency risk.
Other routes, and what is not AVGO
Exchange-traded funds (ETFs) also hold Broadcom: 7.26% of iShares Semiconductor (SOXX) and 5.46% of VanEck Semiconductor (SMH) on 21 October 2026, and 2.49% of Invesco QQQ on 20 October (US semiconductor stocks and ETFs). In India, Mirae Asset’s NYSE FANG+ ETF (9.97% Broadcom, 30 September) closed 51.9% above its net asset value on 21 October, and Motilal Oswal’s Nasdaq 100 ETF 11.7% above.
Not AVGO on Nasdaq:
- Crypto token: Mudrex’s “AVGOB”, “a tokenized bStock that represents Broadcom”, is bought in rupees via UPI, outside LRS; ask a CA about its tax.
- Leveraged and inverse ETFs: AVL, AVGX, AVGG and AVGU target twice AVGO’s daily move and AVS the inverse, resetting daily (leveraged single-stock ETFs).
- Euro quote: Paasa’s 1YD page is a thinly traded euro quote of Broadcom on Germany’s Xetra (average volume about 8,400 shares on 22 October 2026).
